Noise Limits
At our trackdays there are two two types of events when it comes to noise limits.

Most of our events have a noise limit of 105db. This is the typical noise limit for a club race meeting.
The 105db limit is measured using the "drive by" method. There are noise meters all round the circuit taking accurate measurements. Any bike that fails this limit will be black flagged in from the session and it will need to be rectified before being allowed to continue.

Some of our events are "quiet days". The noise limit for these events are 98db. This is the legal limit for riding "on the road".
98db days mean that your bike must not exceed this limit on a drive by test (mentioned above). Any machine that breaks this limit will be removed from the circuit until the silencer has be replaced or modified to pass this test.

How do I know how noisy my bike is?

Most new "full" race systems are built with 105db race limits in mind (to coincide with typical ACU race regulations). Straight through (open) pipes will fail. Race systems that have been on the bike for a few years might have difficulty as the baffle packing inside disintegrates over time. Home made exhaust systems will often exceed the limit. If you have a full system and are not sure of it's noise level it would be good idea to check with the exhaust manufacturer. Changing only the end can for an aftermarket unit will usually be within the 105db limit if it is made by a reputable company. Once again the age of the packing will reduce its noise dampening effect.

What can I do if my bike is too noisy?

You will be given the opportunity to rectify the noise level and continue. Baffle inserts are a fast, effective, economic way of reducing the noise level of your exhaust. There are many designs, easily avaialble and suitable for most exhaust systems. They will reduce the noise level of your exhuast by 3 or 4 db. This may not sound a lot - but it is a significant reduction. Or take your standard exhaust can (system) just in case.

It is your responsibility to make sure your bike is within the limits.
